Review of Hoop Dreams (1994) by Paul W — 20 Nov 2011
Incredible, epic documentary traces the lives of two wannabe NBA basketball players. One of these stories would be interesting enough, but the real genius was to find two equally eventful narratives, twisting like a double-helix to form a central spine of the story.
As one boy follows his dreams through the scholarship system, while the other is forced to drop out and head to public school due to financial troubles, the simple sports drama develops into a stunning indictment of the gladitorial American college sports business, concluding that maybe slavery is alive and well, just under a different name.
