Review of Hook (1991) by Mathew W — 14 Sep 2013
"Hook" has its moments. I probably liked it more than I should have when I first saw it because I'm so dedicated to the Peter Pan mythos. The movie is visually beautiful and true to J.M. Barrie's storyline.
An idea of a grown-up Peter fighting Captain Hook one more time is cool, and for most of the movie, I buy Robin Williams as that failed father/stressed out businessman. As that Peter, he his fantastic.
But when he becomes Peter Pan, I find it a little silly. Julia Roberts is a smart choice for Tinker Bell, Bob Hoskins is a swell Smee, and Dustin Hoffman, surprisingly, is great (I didn't even recognize him).
Overall, the movie has a terrific visual quality, enough action and humor, and a suitably sweet ending. As a sequel to Peter Pan, it's fun and it mostly works. But if you want an A-grade take on J.
M. Barrie's tale, this isn't it. I actually appreciate the 2003 adaptation of "Peter Pan", which trades shmaltz for the sincere, darker quotients of the story.
