Review of Hook (1991) by Jacob F — 19 Dec 2011
I think that this is one of Steven Spielberg's most underestimated films for I found it charming and magical. Sure the film has its flaws including awkward situations and dialogue, occasional wooden acting, and some plot inconsistencies.
But I don't think that any of those things come at the expense of the film's sense of adventure and wonder. I think that Dustin Hoffman shined as Captain Hook who played him with humor and hatefulness.
From a casting point of view, nobody could have played a grown-up Peter Pan better than Robin Williams. I love how he grows from a workaholic dad to the heroic and fun-loving Pan. The film also has a great message saying that even though we all have to grow up sometime, it doesn't mean we can't be in touch with our inner youth.
I also love the message saying that family matters and must not be taken for granted. Overall, I find Hook to be a sweet, fun, and adventurous entry from Steven Spielberg.
