Review of Hoodwinked Too! Hood VS. Evil (2011) by Jamal S — 24 Apr 2011
Girls in da hood takes on a whole new meaning in this animated feature.
Heroes hottie Hayden Panettiere is the voice of Red Riding Hood, an agent of the H.E.A. (Happily Ever After) whose mission it is to rescue any characters in trouble and make sure they have a happy ending.
Patrick Warburton (who uses the same damn voice in everything he's in) voices the Big Bad Wolf; though, in this movie, he's the slapsticky old joke wolf AND agent partner of Red.
While Red spends some away time practicing her skills, Grandma (voiced by Glenn Close) gets kidnapped while trying to save Hansel and Gretel (SNL's Bill Hader and Amy Poehler) from the witch.
The storyline goes faster in this movie than the script did in Clerks (in other words, WAY too fast).
For a kid movie, it slightly works. Not overly entertaining for the adults. But, for the jealous moms bringing their kids, you do get to see Heidi Klum playing/voicing a fat woman named, big stretch here, Heidi.
Half of the cast sounds like they're just trying to get through the thing as quickly as possible. The only acting energy seemed to come from Bill and Amy. Joan Cusack voiced the kidnapping witch, but wasn't sounding like one. For what the character looked like, Joan's voice was too young for it.
There were several points where the character mouth animation wasn't coming close to what was spoken. Not sure whether to blame the animators or a possible last minute change in the script.
The 3D effects were okay: not as bad as Alice In Wonderland but not as good as How To Train Your Dragon.
I refuse to say that this movie was a total failure because it did have its moments.
Movie warnings: explosions, overuse of the word 'muffins' as cursing, senior citizen abuse, chocolate gorging, slight Shrek movie similarities, and extreme yodelling.
