Review of Hoodlum (1997) by Tyler L — 09 Jun 2007
Ellsworth "Bumpy" Johnson has just been released from Sing Sing and he returns to a Harlem that is very different. The depression has struck Harlem hard, and striking even harder is one of the most nortrious figures in crime history, Dutch Shultz(Tim Roth). Shultz is trying to muscle in on Harlem's illegal lottery known as the "Numbers", run primarily by Madame Queen(Cicely Tyson). Quickly over the course of the year and the next year, Harlem becomes a warzone over the Numbers racket. Eventually leading Shultz's partner and head of the Mafia "commission", Charles "Lucky" Luciano(Andy Garcia) to intervine.
A very good movie, I gave it three stars because it was a little drawn out in parts, but it had great action, intensity, and Tim Roth and Laurence Fishburne give in my opinion Oscar calibur performances. Overall a good movie.
