Review of Hoodlum (1997) by David S — 17 Sep 2007
Tim Roth gave such a ferocious performance as Dutch Schultz that the viewer is glued to the screen whenever he was present... Unfortunately, whenever he is off screen the film becomes a dull and derivate example of the gangster genre that is painfully mediocre... Everything is by-the-numbers and there is no effort for originality, add the fact that the film has very static and workmanlike direction, silly dialog, weak supporting performances, and a very anti-climatic ending, and you get a very weak film that is saved from *complete* disaster due to the colossal performance of the criminally underrated Tim Roth.
Oh, and it's from the writer of "Species II"... *cringe*.
