Review of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989) by Jacob M — 12 Oct 2013
A solid offering from Disney. The green-screen special effects are dated, but use of actual sets (giant legos(TM), enormous cookies, a jungle consisiting of huge blades of grass, etc.) is refreshing in this era of CGI.
The story itself is comfortably formulaic. A father becomes so involved in his work that he begins to neglect his family. A series of circumstances causes him to lose his family, so he refocuses his energies on rescuing them.
Meanwhile, the children are transported to an unfamiliar environment through a fantastic event, and while they are initially antagonistic toward each other, by the end of the movie they have learned to work together to survive, and become friends.
