Review of Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993) by J-Man 24 — 08 Aug 2008
Credit should go to the actors who lent their voices for the loyal animals in this kiddie picture, with Fox as a glutton mutt, Ameche as a wise Golden Retriever, and Field as a spoiled Himalayan cat. Kids will be transfixed by these adorable creatures as they risk life and limb to trek across a vast mountain range in order to be reunited with their owners.
Honestly, most children I know would give anything to have loyal pets like these, especially since they don't know what the animals are thinking of them half the time. The human actors, most of them standing in as distractions so the animals can get more star time, are less interesting than their four-legged counterparts, which was probably the intent of the filmmakers.
Still, you have to admire the bond the child actors share with their animal friends, which will also make the kids jealous. And, as an extra bonus, this is the only film in recent memory in which the animals express themselves vocally without ever moving their mouths!
