Review of Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993) by Catherine S — 06 Jul 2011
One of the earliest movies I ever watched as well as one of my favorites, Homeward Bound is an excellent film with beautiful cinematography, funny characters, and a good mix of comedy and drama that's perfect for the family.
A remake of Disney's The Incredible Journey, Homeward Bound stars a bulldog named Chance who has been recently adopted by a young boy named Jamie Bunford. Chance also lives with an older golden retriever named Shadow who belongs to Jamie's older brother Peter, and Sassy, a Himalayan cat that belongs to Hope Bunford. When the family goes on vacation and leave the animals to the care of one of their friends, the animals believe they've been abandoned. So, the three set off to find their owners and must deal with challenges like waterfalls, porcupines, and even Animal Control to get back home.
Unlike other movies with "talking animals", Homeward Bound doesn't add in the cheap effect of moving the animals' mouths with CGI or puppetry. Which I think works for this movie, as moving the mouth probably would've cheapened the film. The voice actors are wonderful, though some of the actors could've done a bit better. And like I said, the movie looks great even now.
So yes, kids will enjoy this and the parents will probably equally enjoy this. It's entertaining, hilarious, and most of all clean. (Real rating: 99%).
