Review of Home of the Brave (2006) by Kimberley O — 05 Aug 2007
Such a shame - this was a really disappointing film. Powerful topic, good intentions, but appalling dialogue, poor performances by otherwise good actors who seem to be trying too hard, ruined it for me about 30 minutes into the film (save for Samuel L Jackson who is impressive as always).
There are a few genuinely moving moments, but for the most part this film feels more like a made-for-tv melodrama. In general: cliched, over-dramatised, with far too many laughably bad scenes that actually provoke empathetic embarrassment.
.. and that's never a good thing. Christina Ricci makes an appearance (why I'll never know) and 50 Cent? Just a little tip: Stick to rapping: unlike acting, it does not require an understanding of the English language.
