Review of Home of the Brave (2006) by Brent W — 15 Jan 2008
A somewhat peculiar film, in that it deals less (or at all) with the political implications of the invasion in Iraq (as one would expect), but with the personal stories of the US veterans. I guess this is also an important issue, but it could be given in a somewhat deeper way than this.
Remember "Platoon" and "Apocalypse Now"? There the personality of the soldier, and the impact of war was also very much the subject, but it did not leave out a political 'in-your-face' innuendo.
This one has no similarities. In the end, taking into account the personal tragedies of the characters for granted as something war, any war, brings to all participants, one is forced to ask himself - was it not in the end the fault of the uninvited invader? We can glorify - and sympathize with - people doing their job, a job that does not permit asking questions at that, but we cannot and must not overlook the big picture.
