Home Alone 2 captures a lot of the same magic as the original. That could be because it's basically the exact same story, but it also brings some new stuff to the table. Tim Curry is a delightful foil for Kevin's antics, and it's fun to see the cast all back together again.
It may be a copycat sequel, but if the formula ain't broken, don't fix it.
