Review of Home Alone (1990) by Kenny N — 09 Oct 2016
The face that launched a thousand ships. After this movie was made, the rules were changed for Hollywood children's filmmaking. Every kid flick had to have two or more over the top bunglers be badly beaten beyond recognition by a smartass kid.
It became LAW. That's how we ended up with movies like "Blank Check" and "Dennis the Menace" (the latter involved John Hughes ripping off himself.) While the film's bad guy bashing is it's hallmark and the source of it's infamy, the non-bashing moments still have their charms.
Catherine O'Hara, a hilarious comedienne, manages to give an extra dimension to her character with some dramatic moments. John Candy is hilarious in his scenes that are definitely shoehorned in, but he's so funny it's forgivable.
Overall...one of the most influential and imitated films in all of cinema history. Suck on that, Martin Scorsese.
