Review of Home Again (2017) by Sue O — 16 Sep 2017
I found this disappointing. I normally love Reese Witherspoon, but she was only remotely believable in this role. I thought Pico Alexander was very convincing as the young man who falls in love with Reese, but to have the concept in the movie that all of the three guys were "a little bit in love with her" was just not believable and her character was barely even likable.
To enjoy this movie, for sure you have to do major suspension in disbelief for any of the plot (what there is of a plot, which isn't much); and I was okay with doing that, but Reese's character was just not believable.
If the movie's main statement was to show that a 40 year old woman can act more emotionally immaturely than the twenty-something guys she was befriending, then good job. The three young guys basically stole the movie and upstaged Reese and wound up looking more mature than both Reese's character and her estranged husband.
Though, there were a few moments of actually funny scenes in the middle part of the movie. I really loved Pico Alexander, who was very sincere in his role, and very believable, but the ending of the movie fell very flat.
I walked out feeling disappointed. I just wanted a light, enjoyable comedy romance piece of escapism that was at least remotely believable! And this movie just could not deliver this. (slight spoiler alert ahead) Not only was Reese unbelievable in this role, but I guess the movie decided to be a slice of life comedy and not a romance comedy, since the romance appears to fizzle out in the end.
Question, how can you have a romantic comedy without the romance? Answer: Home Again. Maybe just for renting at home, if you're really bored and there isn't much else on, it will keep you mildly entertained, just barely.
