Review of Home Again (2017) by Connor S — 03 Dec 2017
I admit I'm not the best judge of romantic comedies. In fact, the only reason I watched as much of this movie as I did is because there wasn't anything else to do at work, but in my opinion, the latest rom-com starring Reese Witherspoon (Legally Blonde) is not worth your time.
Home Again is the director's first movie, and that shows. Even though she has her experienced mother, Nancy Meyers, as a producer, they play it too safe in this movie. It's a movie about Hollywood people made by Hollywood people, for crying out loud! Most of the jokes fail because they're executed clumsily, and the main romance develops though a lazy montage. Not enough conflicts break out, and the ones that do are caused by non-issues that have no right to divide the characters as much as they do. Between all that and the soothing soundtrack, the movie is just boring (though not as boring as pacing the lobby looking for popcorn kernels to sweep up). The characters are all pleasant enough, but they aren't terribly compelling. Then again, the audience let out a quick applause, so I could be completely wrong.
