Review of Home (2015) by Ned M — 20 Jun 2015
Home is refreshingly engaging on many levels. How great to see the positive portrayal of a smart, strong, younger female (7th grade), minority (West Indies/Caribbean/African-American/Hispanic), immigrant (who has come to America from Barbados - just like the voice-over actress/singer Rihanna) who struggles with issues of acceptance and feelings of being out of place in the world.
The heroine is a person who teaches others and at the same time learns some important life lessons about friendship, forgiveness, loyalty, perseverance, hope and love. It's a wonderful combination of silliness and seriousness that kids and adults can enjoy and relate to.
The soundtrack is good. The underlying message of questioning shady authority figures is appropriate wisdom today as always. Home is a delight and although it could be argued that the title is a bit curious, if not off the mark, it might inspire viewers to think differently about their own home and how to make it a better place.
