Review of Holy Motors (2012) by Stephen C — 07 Oct 2012
In an age where it sometimes feels films have nothing to offer, along comes Leos Carax with something so totally out there you gain the belief that cinema at its best is still a great art form.
Following a prologue featuring the director himself which sets the tone of the film we follow the daily progress of Monsieur Oscar.
Oscar is a man of many talents all of them odd as we see him in various disguises and scenarios which include Kidnapping Eva Mendes dressed as aflower eating tramp,Killing his own doppleganger in an empty warehouse and finally meeting an old flame in an abandoned department store over the Pont Neuf Bridge.
Its fair to say Denis Lavant is the star of his film, his performance is nothing short of masterful as he changes into different characters right in front of your eyes and not only that inhabits them and makes them feel very real.
Carax also pays homage to the great filmakers such as Hitchcock,Bunuel,Godard and countless others.
Edith Scob and Kylie Minouge are also excellent and Michel Piccoli gets a sinister cameo as the man with the moustache .
One could acuuse the film of being pretentious and a David Lynch clone, but that simply detracts from the fact that the film has more to say about identity and the human condition than most Hollywood movies can muster .
A masterpiece of modern filmaking make no mistake.
