Review of Holy Motors (2012) by Brandon S — 03 Jan 2014
Surrealist gold. This is the stuff dreams are made of, but its also some of the stuff lives are made of. Kind of like a canned-life-product (contains human life as an ingredient). It is possible think up coherent plots that fit the movie, I have my own story for it, but the film isnt about that. Most movies want you to forget you are watching imitation life, but this movie wont stop reminding you of it. The performances are moving, but dont expect to get to know the characters very well.
The movie follows two people through the course of day. One lives the lives of several different characters through a series of appointments, the other drives him around to these appointments. Its in French but the dialog is not lengthy so reading the subtitles isnt a race to the end of every sentence.
