Review of Hollywoodland (2006) by Paul T — 06 Oct 2008
I'm actually going to have to watch this one again to crystalise my thoughts, but Hollywoodland, though flawed, is still a fascinating study of Hollywood in the 1950s, as it explores the various scenarios which may have played out around the untimely death of Superman TV series star, George Reeves.
The sequences which involve the production and publicity for the Superman series are in themselves priceless, and performances across the board are first rate... with a special mention to a luminous Diane Lane as the just past her prime femme fatale.
What I particularly liked about the film though is the way it turns from a somewhat bland and superficial look into the lives of the famous and not quite so in 1950's Hollywood... into something with a powerful emotional and psychological punch, reflected in subtle changes to the cinematography as the film progresses.
I want to see it again.
