Review of Hollywoodland (2006) by Bryan P — 01 Jul 2010
Hollywoodland....starring Adrien Brody, Ben Affleck, Bob Hoskins, and Diane Lane. This film is about a private investigator (Adrien Brody) trying to figure out the mysterious suicide/murder of tv actor George Reeves (Ben Affleck) in the late 1950s.
I found Hollyoodland to be a very good movie. The story was very interesting to follow, seeing that most of us may have never heard of George Reeves or knew about him, but never really followed up on what happened to him during his career all the way to his final days. I really liked the cinematography and set pieces. We felt we've been transported back to the 50's.
There is great acting all around in this film, but I think Ben Affleck really steals the show. I'm not really a fan of his, but he really did a fantastic job playing George Reeves. Even though I never seen his Superman tv show, I really felt it was George Reeves in this film, not Ben Affleck. That shows how good he was in this film. I wish though, that Bob Hoskins had got more screen time. I enjoy watching Bob Hoskins dominate a film he is in, and seeing him in Hollywoodland was great! (You really don't see him in anything that much anymore).
If you like detective movies or just looking for a change of pace in your movie viewing, then this is a movie to check out.
8/10.
