Review of Hollywoodland (2006) by Aaron M — 23 Dec 2010
Really interesting take on the life and death of Superman star George Reeves and the questions surrounding his death. Was it suicide, murder, or an accident? Unfortunately, we'll likely never know the truth, but this movie does a terrific job of showing you how several scenarios are certainly fathomable.
Great performance by Ben Affleck (a very under appreciated actor, IMO) and this cast is loaded with famous names and good talent. And they did a very nice job of re-creating the time period. I was afraid this was going to be a bore, but I was pleasantly surprised at how intriguing it was.
And upon some quick reading on the subject, I'm glad to hear that most of what was presented in this film was very consistent with what actually happened. This despite the fact that the detective depicted here was not.
I can live with that b/c it presents a simpler avenue for what several true life investigators turned up. I was however disappointed to learn that the most riveting scene in the movie....when a child turns a gun on Superman.
...actually can not be proven to have actually occurred. But it makes for a great story. As does this entire subject matter.
