Review of Hollywoodland (2006) by Sheila C — 09 Dec 2011
Hollywoodland is a compelling film that fictionalizes a story surrounding the death of famed Superman actor George Reeves. The film told two stories, the story of a Private I portrayed by Adrien Brody investigating the circumstances of Reeves' death and his belief that it may not be a suicide.
The second is what I found to be the bulk of the entire movie and that was the life of George Reeves in a stunning acting turn by Ben Affleck. The emotion Affleck gives in potraying Reeves and the frustration in continually being attached to the name Superman, unable to make a break into films is great.
This may be one of if not Affleck's best acting performances in his career. I love how director Allen Coulter film gave us a look at Old Hollywood. The set pieces, the cars, the music it was very much like watching a classic movie, plus the inclusion of a mystery, an unsolved one for that matter it made the film almost noir.
