Review of Hollywoodland (2006) by Mitchell E — 17 Sep 2008
I got this film free from my local library and when I first put it into the DVD player I didn't really know what to expect. What I got was a very well written, well crafted true to life thriller. I don't know much about the actual George Reeve's case other than he was the man that first played Superman and was in From Here To Eternity so I don't know how much of the history the crew got right but I can say that every detail to the period was spot on.
Ben Affleck was surprisingly good in it and Adrien Brody is excellent as always. Diane Lane in my opinion fell short and was overshadowed by Robin Tunney's fearless performance. The direction wasn't grand or even very original but it fit the mood of the piece and sucked me into the story.
I can recommend this film based on Affleck and Brody's performances alone and can say that it did ignite my interest in the real case. So give Hollywoodland a try and get ready to be transported into a world of deceit and betrayal.
