Review of Holiday Inn (1942) by Mark B — 09 Nov 2011
Holiday Inn is full of great Irving Berlin music and gave us White Christmas. The story is simple but a pretty entertaining comedy/romance movie that is primarily seen as a Christmas movie nowadays because of White Christmas (though the film was released in August and the song White Christmas became a chart topper in October).
The popularity of White Christmas led to the film in 1954. Astaire and Crosby aren't great actors or anything, but perform well in the movie. The unfortunate aspect of Holiday Inn is a blackface performance for Abraham Lincoln's Birthday.
Story wise the blackface makes sense, but seeing it now it is pretty horrible. Sometimes this is edited out, but if it isn't it is a sign of how much things have changed.
