Review of Holes (2003) by Michael D — 18 Nov 2012
A typical Disney film in most respects. Certain aspects of how it was made give me some serious heartburn, such as the terrible, flat camera angles that most of the movie seems to be shot in. The editing is really bad in some spots, and there's an overuse of really cheap looking slow motion in random parts for no discernible reason except to lengthen shots that would probably otherwise be too short.
These technical failings are almost forgivable, however, because the story itself is actually not bad, and the characters are well fleshed out and, for the most part, well acted. I say almost forgivable, though, because the ending of this movie sucks so fucking bad I can't even stand it.
You got this admittedly pretty clichà (C)d and predictable, yet intricately plotted and emotionally involving story about friendship and overcoming adversity, it ties up nicely with Zero reuniting with his mother, and then very much out of nowhere it turns into something better suited for a Disney channel made-for-tv movie.
What the fuck were they thinking?!
