Review of Holes (2003) by Steven P — 17 Mar 2010
I didn't read the book for my 5th grade class, and I can hardly tolerate it now. This movie may be the first true role of Shia LaBeouf, but he didn't really achieve mainstream success until he became Sam Witwicky of the "Transformers" films (even more so in "Revenge of the Fallen", the original was just changing the tires of the then-totaled franchise.
). Here, he's in a story that accurately follows the book, but the book was a mindless piece of sugarcoated drivel, and this film grudgingly follows suit. When you look at the adult cast, you see just how much talent has been flagrantly wasted: Sigourney Weaver, Jon Voight, and Tim Blake Nelson all run a summer camp that would never pass the Better Business Bureau's laws regarding child labor.
The other kids are a fat person and a black man who is still able to see through glasses that are completely covered with dirt (both as boring as defragmenting your hard drive), and a curly-top who seems dumb, but actually might show considerable intelligence.
No, you think? Regarding that I was watching and reading "Lord of the Rings" when this daffy book and movie were out, I slap this sticky-sweet tale with the alternate title of "Plot Holes".
