Review of Hold the Dark (2018) by Joshua K — 16 Oct 2018
This is possibly one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Please don't waste 2+ hours watching this unless you want to see some good cinimatography. The only reason I gave it one star is beacuse the shots are beautiful and the setting is well-framed.
In fact, the scenery tells more of the story than thre characters. After the movie, I had to read three separate articles to understand what happened. Sometimes, that's a good thing. It means the movie did a good job.
But this movie was just sloppy. The special connection between husband and wife is never out-right confirmed; the idea of the duality of man is mostly done right but not every "dark" action takes place under a guise; and the action scenes are wholly unrealistic.
One shootout with police lasts twenty minutes which seems a lifetime in this movie. Furthermore, it's completely unrealistic. As are the pauses and lack of dialogue. This movie is a waste of time that does nothing to really delve into and unpack the dichotomy of savagery versus civility that exists within us all.
It's just a bloody rampage of pseudo-psychological questions that goes nowhere.
