Review of Hogfather (2007) by Benjamin F — 11 May 2008
While not without flaws in its pacing, Hogfather is a genuinely enjoyable fantasy film. For a fairly low budget TV movie - separated into two 90-minute parts, no less - the entire film is simply impressive.
Terry Pratchett's Discworld is brought to immersive, believable life. The soundtrack serves the film well in contributing to its magical atmosphere. The cast itself is strong, with many good performances - including Michelle Dockery as Susan, Marc Warren as Mr.
Teatime, and David Jason as Albert. The puppetry and acting behind Death were thoroughly enjoyable as well. But of course, the big star of the film is Terry Pratchett's script - dry, dark, whimsical, absurd, and hilarious.
I haven't read any of Pratchett's books yet myself, admittedly, but I've had some amount of familiarity with his Discworld universe. And as fresh fantasy cinema goes, Hogfather absolutely stands out.
It may be long, but it's well worth your time. Especially impressive as a holiday film, considering how awful most of those are.
