Review of Hogfather (2007) by James J — 22 Dec 2011
Pratchett's subtle, dry wit is hardly translatable into a live-action film medium, but this was quite a remarkable attempt, especially considering it's made for television. Production values fall somewhere above your run-of-the-mill miniseries and just millimeters short of a big-budget feature film.
It's not quite an encapsulating shove into the Discworld as one would experience reading any of the Discworld books, but it stays as true to the source as is filmicly possible. It is refreshing seeing a filmic attempt at the fantasy genre that never relies on the conventions of the genre and stands on its own as a world filled with irony, whimsy and incidentally parodying our own modern world.
I would ask why this never took off here in the states, but then I remembered that Americans just donâ??t get irony, and therefore wouldnâ??t understand most of this film. But if you ever get the chance to indulge in this gem, I highly recommend it.
If you've never delved into the Pratchett universe, you are in for a real treat!
