Review of Hoffa (1992) by Tristan M — 25 Aug 2014
A very interesting film, and one that I knew very little about going into it. It's a great story and what could seem like a boring plot it was done with excitement and skill. The acting in absolutely amazing, Jack Nicholson and Danny de Vito are top notch actors.
I do find some of the film confusing, with Jimmy Hoffas job to be somewhat uncertain, and the constant transition between the past and present to be confusing as well. I thought the movie would be more about gangsters an the mob, but instead it was totally different, abouta labor organizer who is the leader of a strike movement by truckers.
He eventully gets runs into problems with the gouverment, who want to see him put in jail because of suspected connections with gangsters. The movie was great, it never got slow, there was always loud talk and and Hoffa mad at someone.
The brawl with the Teamsters against their imployers was a great chaotic scene, and the two courtroom scenes particularly the first one were very well done and engaging. Throughout the movie there was always a bit of Hoffa being a smartass and other things that made you laugh, but they don't take away from the realism or the seriousness of the film.
The end is very unexpected, and is an interesting choice of how to end his life, because although the story is true it isn't known how Hoffa disappeared. Hoffa is definatly a likable character, as are his friends and the ending is a sad and unfortunate way to end his life.
As a whole the movie was good, the begining was a little difficult to understand completely what is going on, and the end isn't in my opinion the best guess that could have been portrayed. Above all the excellent acting is the movies brightest side.
