Review of Hocus Pocus 2 (2022) by Johnnycloud81 — 01 Oct 2022
If you’re a Hocus Pocus fan, DO NOT watch this film unless you want to be disappointed. I was seriously and surprisingly let down with this movie. I read the book & this movie had maybe 10% of the book’s content in it.
The characters were all changed around. And the most disappointing part was that there was no mention at all of Max, Dani, or Allison. The main character was supposed to be Max & Allison’s daughter Poppy.
And there was a strong teen lesbian love story involving Poppy that was basically ignored. This part offended me the most as a member of the queer/LGBTQIA+ community. I felt like the makers wanted to focus on the Sanderson sisters more and create the usual sugary sweet story of bonds of friendship being the most important thing.
While true, it was not exactly what the book centered on. The only former characters extremely briefly mentioned were Emily & Thackery Binx. The book was darker but had a lot more action in it. Had Disney & the makers of this film stuck true to the original story (which is a must read for real Hocus Pocus fans) this movie could have been a spectacular success instead of the epic failure it ended up being.
I recommend seriously skipping this film & reading the book instead to find out what really happened with the Sanderson sisters when they came back again 25 years later.
