Review of Hocus Pocus (1993) by Blais E — 14 Mar 2011
Uber-fun, madcap romp with Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, & the forever-bouncy Sarah Jessica Parker pulling out all the stops as the comedically-despicable, cannabalistic Sanderson sisters, a triumvirate of vicious witches originally dispatched of during the Salem Witch Trials & returned from the dead to continue on their havoc-wreaking path.
Midler is at her hammy- best here, clearly enjoying her very unsubtle performance as the buck-toothed ringleader of the threesome, as do her cohorts SJP as her dingbat, sluttish younger sibling, and the always-amusing Najimy as the rotund, baby-seeking component of the ghoulish trio.
The younger members of the cast (Omri Katz, the statuesque Vinessa Shaw, Thora Birch-) do a fine job as well. Oh, and did I mention it's a Disney film? A perfect choice for a Halloween night viewing!
