Review of Hobo with a Shotgun (2011) by James R — 23 Sep 2012
A festival of violence and gore that makes no apologies, with some human story. Think Mad Max meets Escape From New York meets George Romero films (minus the zombies) meets Hostel -- all on a drunken rampage together. Except I definitely don't think this movie is as good as any one of those on the whole. Generally I found both the movie and the acting from the cast (other than Rutger Hauer since he is always great) get better as the film progressed. The stakes and drama progressively increase as well so if you don't like it at first give it some more time.
Since social structures have decayed for some reason, government is minimal or non-existant and police are pretty much all corrupted. Most criminals seem to have a fetish for violence, horror, and torture which gives this movie its heart, even though it likes to rip that heart out, throw it on the ground, and chop it up with a chainsaw. It certainly had its moments but I would recommend Death Proof if you want something like this that is more evenly paced, has better overall acting, and is somewhat more intelligent for this style of film.
