Review of Hobo with a Shotgun (2011) by Mark O — 09 Nov 2011
While Machete, Planet Terror, and Death Proof are great films. This is better. While they went and became parodies and tributes to the genre this just went out there and made an actual grind house movie.
You get that horrible dialogue, the cheesy 80's synth music, lack of any real actors (except for the great Rutger Hauer who was actually making these movies in the 80's), and all the over-the-top violence that a growing boy needs.
It's basically non-stop offensive, silly, gross action. But what makes it stand-out over any other recent modern exploit flick is the style it moves with is it being vibrant, over saturated color palette, the over exaggeration of inner city life and had just enough creativity to raise an eye brow or two.
It also helps that it comes off with a great sense of black humor combined with a earnest sense of humanity. I love Rutger Hauer. His performance in Blade Runner gives cinema history one of it's best scenes.
This man can act. No matter what the film is he gives it it all. With how much of a cheap crappy film this is he chews through his lines like he is reciting Shakespeare.
