Review of Hobo with a Shotgun (2007) by Bill O — 10 Jan 2012
If you're looking for a smart thriller or action movie, look elsewhere. If you want a bare bones exploitation flick about- as the title suggests- a hobo with a shotgun, you've found your movie.
Everything about Hobo with a Shotgun is wonderfully over the top, from the peaceful opening credits to the madness that ensues for the rest of the 86 minute ride into head-severing, blood-splattering, limb-chopping ride accompanied by a trio of over-the-top villains who shout and act out every cliche any movie baddie could muster, a townful of people and police alike who are out for blood, a pair of iron-armored clad men named The Plague, and Rutger Hauer blasting holes in pimps, drug dealers, and child rapists while spitting out cheesy yet awesome one liners.
Even the slow moments in this one (which last about 5-10 minutes each for all of the 3-4 that are in it) don't even seem that slow due to the fact that the characters are still being amusing with their grindhouse and 80's action flick-esque dialogue.
The look of this film itself goes from an opening sequence where you clearly can tell that its a set piece on a moving background to vibrant colors that accentuate the gore, to full on color filters reminiscent of the 70's theater movies made to cash in on the violence hysteria kicked up by Wes Craven and Tobe Hooper.
Hobo with a Shotgun relentless, blood-splattering hellride that any connoisseur of violence, gore, and straight-up cheesiness could enjoy.
