Review of Hobo with a Shotgun (2007) by Gerard M — 18 Mar 2012
A polarizing film that gets responses all over the map. The opening credits sequence is fantastic, probably the best part of the movie. It definitely has the 70's grindhouse style title sequence down to a T. Unfortunately, its probably the best part of the movie, and "Hobo" ditches the grindhouse style for a Troma-esque romp through ludicrous trash. Its over the top and insane. Of course, if you try to look at it from one stand-point, it is morally reprehensible. Obviously, none of these characters can be applauded. But the film's last goal is to instill some sense of morality on its audience. This is simply balls-to-the-walls trash, crafted lovingly with a wicked sense of bad taste designed to shock, thrill and disturb its audience. I think it pulls off these three points.
Strictly only for those who like exploitation, Troma and similar style film-making. This is a hodge-podge of disparate elements, some times thematically making sense, other times not, but nonetheless, it is a mild success as a modern exploitation film with homage to classics. If you dig the genre, then you get it, and you'll probably find some entertainment in the well-made trash of "Hobo With A Shotgun.".
