Review of Hobo with a Shotgun (2007) by Nash A — 12 Jul 2012
Hobo with a Shotgun is a movie about a homeless man who wields a shotgun, killing everything in sight that poses a threat to himself and harmless civilians who live in the unamed city in which this movie takes place.
Given that the city is the capitol city of crime and mass-murder, the hobo gets to kill a lot of people. The killings that go on in this movie are brutal, disgusting, and unrelentingly graphic. A bunch of children are burnt alive in a schoolbus.
A rope around someones neck yanks the head off, causing a shower of blood. A man hangs upside down while topless women beat him to death with clubs. Heads explodes into millions of bits. A girls hand is forces into a car, causing the hand to slowly grind down to a stump.
Organs hang out of dead and dying bodies. Never have I seen a movie so relentless and over-the-top in its gore factor. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It's definitely a guilty pleasure. Hobo with a Shotgun is exciting, dark, and has a handful of great performances.
Brian Downy as "The Drake" gives of the most over-the-top silly performances I have ever seen, mugging up to the camera and delivering all of his lines like every breath might be his last. It's so crazy you just can't help but laugh.
Everybody else gives similarly insane performances. However, Rutger Hauer (the hobo) is the only one who is actually serious. It is still a great perofmance, though. Overall, there may be a lot of plotholes and it may be rather simple-minded, but Hobo with a Shotgun is just a movie you have to have fun with.
It just wants to entertain, and entertain it did.
