Review of Hitchcock (2012) by Nathan E — 19 Apr 2013
A wonderful tribute to Hitchcock and his films. What makes this film extra brilliant is the delicious irony of putting the master himself into one of his own films - with all of his trademark visual idiosyncrasies (think Tim Burton's Ed Wood). Hitchcock fans will eat up all of the references and in-jokes (for example, using food when characters talk about death or sex).
Anthony Hopkins disappears into his role; the makeup was top notch. Though I must say that his voice left more to be desired. I was particularly impressed with Scarlett Johansson's performance. She really did her homework on Janet Leigh. As did Jessica Biel and James D'Arcy. Just brilliant performances all around that really captured the essence of the real life person.
Only qualm I have with the film (a small one) is the messed up timeline (for example, the shower scene took a week to shoot, and was shot from multiple angles). But in a film that is a stylistic tribute to Hitchcock, I can forgive it.
