Review of Hitchcock (2012) by Dana F — 20 Apr 2013
"Hitchcock" is equal parts the story of Hitch and his wife, and the story of the trials and tribulations of making Psycho. It doesn't seem like to two should go together, but the film is constructed well and the blend of the story lines really does work.
Being a HUGE fan of "Psycho", of course I was fascinated by a movie about how it was made. And I'm sure that being a fan added a huge amount to my enjoyment of this film. But if you have never seen Psycho, you may not enjoy it as much as I did.
The performances are spectacular, Hopkins and Mirren are both fantastic... how can this movie not be a success when you have these two actors sharing the screen? Their scenes are something to behold. The supporting cast is also good (though I'm not sure about Jessica Biel as Vera Miles? Really??).
The movie is filmed with style too. I was surprised that the movie did not really explore the notorious dark side of Hitchcock, instead it kind of sugar-coated him to make him a protagonist you can really root for.
This is a feel-good movie, which I did not expect it to be, but it works for what it is.
