Review of Hitchcock (2012) by Jessica B — 27 Sep 2013
Watching this I couldn't help but sigh. It's not that Anthony Hopkins isn't a great actor. It's not that he didn't do a good job. It's just that Alfred Hitchcock was such a unique person that I believe nobody could emulate him correctly.
Ever. So with that in mind I turned my attention everywhere else, except there's a problem with that. I typically don't care for Scarlet Johansson and I've never really watched any of Helen Mirren's works so I didn't know what to expect from her.
I liked the bits of comedy that popped up every now and again and I liked imagining what the process of making Psycho was like. But why was this film made? It's purpose seemed to be 1) a love letter to Alfred Hitchcock, 2) try to promote the films that Hitchcock made, and 3) Hammer home the notion that not only is Hollywood dead, but no one else will ever garner the success and style Hitchcock had.
So therefore I must conclude that this movie was unfortunately doomed the moment it hit the screen and for that I am sorry. It's nothing personal, and also nothing terrible. It was just a bad idea from the start that could never really be brought to life no matter what anyone did.
