Review of His Girl Friday (1940) by Serena B — 01 Apr 2008
My all-time favorite comedy (sorry, Monty Python and the Holy Grail). It's the fastest and funniest film of the 40s and it's so ageless that even today it still snaps, crackles and pops better than most Frat Pack films.
Howard Hawks once said that Cary Grant was "so far the best that there isn't anybody to be compared to him." He had an impeccable sense of comedic timing that can never be topped. He had great chemistry with Kate, Irene and Ingrid, but the only woman who could match him every step of the way was Rosalind Russell, and she damn near steals the show from him.
The dialogue is sharper than a kitchen knife, but their rapport is what carries the film. A must-see.
