Review of His Girl Friday (1940) by James L — 14 Feb 2009
Seen with my lovely wife as part of a Cary Grant double feature at the Brattle Theatre on February 7, 2009. It's a long time favorite of both of ours, and we were both reminded why -- a big, dense, thick screenplay (the joke is it's a 3 hour screenplay compressed into 90 minutes), with dialogue overlapping in the kind of contrapuntal way that anticipates Orson Welles, two protagonists at the tops of their games, and a plot that twists and turns in all manner of screwball ways.
A gem of a film.
