Review of His Girl Friday (1940) by Kyle G — 25 Apr 2012
A swift, tough-minded, snappy 1940s dramedy about journalism. On the eve of her second wedding, Hildergard (Rosalind Russell) returns to her first husband, newspaperman Walter (Cary Grant), and gets embroiled in a dark capital-punishment subplot.
.. back to writing the old newspaper! The style is notoriously stiff and fast-talking, but it's often natural too, especially when Hildie eases back into the newsroom guys' poker game and when Walter drums up a lot of cheeky distractions for the other characters.
Still, Hawks seems OK with an all-too-typical screwball release of dramatic tension: just an incomprehensible blur for the most part.
