Review of His Girl Friday (1940) by Lucas Q — 09 May 2008
Howard Hawks? films are really quite amazing. They usually have fast paced dialogue and incredibly fun situations and characters. I would consider this his pinnacle achievement. Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell are astounding as they match it each with incredibly fast dialogue and constant overlapping of this where the key words are distinguishable easily.
The setting is a newsroom as Russell is returning to her former husband, Cary Grant as the newspaper manager, to get the finishing touches put on her divorce with him and going offer to marry the dashing Ralph Bellamy.
Of course, Grant still loves her and thus he uses his amazing newspaper know how in an attempt to win her back. It is great fun all around even at the near expense of being arrested.
