Review of Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) by Susan G — 02 Jul 2007
Director Alain Resnais' first feature film, and certainly a masterpiece of intellectual and psychological inquiry. Actors are posed just so as they monotone through painful memories and a fragmented narrative.
A French woman and a Japanese man engage in an impromptu affair and an exhaustive post-WWII examination of scarring trauma. The French New Wave is filled with quirky and fun films, but this film - like Resnais' work in general - is thoroughly serious, moody, and intellectual.
Script by Marguerite Duras.
