Review of Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) by Yujin L — 05 Feb 2008
A very innovative and powerful film that still seems imaginative by today's standards. This film roused some very powerful emotions in me, and evoked personal memories of loss and love. As cinematic history, this film's importance (to both the New Wave and to general '60s art house cinema) is hard to overstate.
But when I watched this film, I didn't view it as a history lesson like "Citizen Kane" or even to some extent "Breathless." I viewed it instead as a masterful meditation on love, meaning, and memory.
When you can forget a film's place in history and just view it for what it is, that is a great compliment.
