Review of Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) by Jessica H — 18 Feb 2008
Uber-french movies from the 50's give me the strangest feelings -- a mix of excitement and digust, pleasure and depression. hiroshima mon amour stirs up complicated emotions for me, and it's not just about the subject me; to me, the intimate ramblings of a new relationship are far more alarming than the shots of deformed children. perhaps it's the absolute beauty of every shot, no matter the subject, that's also chilling.
despite that, the opening sequence is breath-taking. the glitter on the bodies is one of the most beautiful cinematic frames i've ever seen. even if you hate the film, you have to admit that it's one of the most well-shot movies of all time.
