Review of Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) by Ian F — 26 Feb 2008
Recently viewed the Criterion version of "Hiroshima" and was dumbfounded. Although Resnais was not officially a member of the French New Wave he employs many of the same elements of his contemporaries -- in particular, the use of flashback and non-linear narrative.
This film isn't so much a love story but a rumination on memory and trauma. Marguerite Duras's screenplay manages to take the incalculable grief of the survivors of Hiroshima and personalize it in the microcosm of one woman's lost love.
