Review of Himalaya (1999) by Private U — 24 Feb 2011
That any director wanted to do this film, and anybody else wanted to produce it, is an astounding achievement itself. Shot at 15,000 to 17,500 feet in the Himilayas over nine months (though they budgeted for 79 days) and uses all non-actors and chronicals the culture of the remote Dolp-Pa.
I was pleased that just as I though the narrative was taking a religious turn, it through me a curveball and proved to be very balanced in its exploration of realist versus traditional perspectives. This film would pair well with The Fast Runner, as far as extremely remote aboriginal films go.
