Review of Highway (2014) by Riz A — 23 Feb 2014
Film library is full of excellent road trip movies like The Hitch-hiker, Five Easy Pieces, Garlands, Daud, Road etc but Highway is that rarity a Bollywood road movie told with verve, class, fun-logic and loads of emotions.
It is a tale of a suppressed girl "Alia Bhatt" whose life gets changed when she is kidnapped by "Randeep Hooda". Without going in too much detail all I can say that Highway is too abstract and only an artist can paly with beautiful and emotional colours on canvas. And only a clever set of audience can understand it. Therefore, Highway is not for masses.
Highway is full of so many beautiful sequences that display the masterly touch of a craftsman "Imtiaz Ali" whose labour is visible in every frame. He is the actual hero of the film. The USP of the film, besides the melodious muisc by oscar winning MC A.R. Rahman of course, are the emotional moments and scenes soaked with values, which are undoubtedly heart rending. Moreover, the director has very well justified both principal performers.
Randeep Hooda is a briilant Indian actor and his performance will be remembered for many years but unfortunately Bollywood masses run after stardom such as (useless) SRK has. Therefore, he has very little chance to win other film producers hearts so that we can enjoy more from his work in future.
On the whole, Highway is like a red pill of matrix because it is a masterpiece which shows a total different world & I am sure that classes will enjoy it.
